The aside is included as part of Mueller's call for a federal judge to be lenient on Cohen and sentence him to no additional jail time in a case brought by federal prosecutors in the Southern District of NY on tax evasion, making false statements in an application for a bank loan, making an illegal campaign contribution and lying to Congress.

But prosecutors gave him no such clearance.

It was the first time the feds directly linked Trump to hush- money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal - a fact noted by former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti.

The Cohen memo prosecutors released Friday lists three people at an August 2014 meeting: Cohen, "Individual-1" and "Chairman-1".

Last week, Cohen made a surprise guilty plea to lying to Congress, a move that refocused attention on Trump's ties to Russian Federation during the 2016 campaign.

But while the filings did not appear to reveal evidence of collusion, they did offer a wealth of new information about what Mueller's team is looking into. The Manhattan prosecutors' charges against Cohen stemmed from a referral from Mueller's team.

"Just to make it crystal clear, NY federal prosecutors concluded that the President of the United States committed a felony", he tweeted.

NY prosecutors, however, were far harsher in their assessment of Cohen's character, saying he should get only a modest reduction in an expected prison sentence of about five years.

"But the crimes committed by Cohen were more serious than his submission allows and were marked by a pattern of deception that permeated his professional life (and was evidently hidden from the friends and family members who wrote on his behalf)", it added.

In the latest filings Friday, prosecutors will weigh in on whether Cohen deserves prison time and, if so, how much.

Prosecutors urged Pauley to hit Cohen with a $500,000 fine and forfeit his assets in addition to the prison sentence.

The documents offered a harsh explanation for Cohen's crimes, saying he was motivated by greed.

Mueller filed court documents with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of NY that state Cohen, despite initially saying he stopped working on the Moscow project in June 2016, "continued to work on the project and discuss it with Individual 1 well into the campaign". "The sentence imposed should reflect the seriousness of Cohen's brazen violations of the election laws and attempt to counter the public cynicism that may arise when individuals like Cohen act as if the political process belongs to the rich and powerful".

The court documents disclosed that Trump hired Cohen in 2007 for $500,000 a year after he ousted the board of a condo that was trying to remove Trump's name from its building.

Friday might have been the most-revealing day of the Mueller investigation. Trump tweeted early Saturday morning.

United States prosecutors have revealed that a Russian offered cooperation to Donald Trump's campaign as early as 2015, declaring that the president's ex-lawyer Michael Cohen had provided "relevant" and "substantial" help to the Russia investigation.

The report was expected to provide more information on Mueller's probe, but federal Judge Amy Berman Jackson granted the special counsel's request to file the report under seal and ordered a redacted version to be released.
