James Comey, the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director called to testify before members of the House of Representatives on Friday, called the hearing a "desperate attempt to find anything that can be used to attack the institutions of justice investigating this president".

The hearing primarily focused on the lead-up to the 2016 election.

Comey was asked numerous questions as well about the handling of the Clinton case, acknowledging at times that certain aspects of it were "unusual" while defending other actions.

Democrats disagreed that Comey wasn't being cooperative.

"Robert Mueller and Leakin' Lyin' James Comey are Best Friends, just one of many Mueller Conflicts of Interest", Trump tweeted.

"Peter Strzok helped draft my letter to Congress on October 28th that Hillary Clinton blames for her defeat".

"I'm still happy to sit in the light and answer all questions".

Mr Mueller's investigation has produced dozens of criminal charges and four guilty pleas from Trump associates.

The hours-long Capitol Hill grilling comes amid turbulence at the White House, and mounting intrigue over Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible contacts between Trump's presidential campaign and Moscow.

"I admire the heck out of the man, but I don't know his phone number, I've never been to his house, I don't know his children's names", Comey said. Trump called that "total bias and corruption at the highest levels of (the) previous Administration", adding that lawmakers should force Comey to answer questions under oath.

Asked if he recalled who drafted the FBI's "initiation document" for the July 2016 Russian Federation investigation, Comey said, "I do not".

"We could have done this in open setting", Comey said, because "we're talking again about Hillary Clinton's emails for Heaven's sake".

Under a deal struck with the House Judiciary Committee, Comey will be free to speak about the questioning afterward and a transcript will be released.

Comey was subpoenaed to appear before the committees. He made a decision to comply after the committee agreed to give him a full transcript of that testimony within 24 hours, which he is free to make public.

Mr Rosenstein oversaw the probe until last month.

The New York congressman Jerrold Nadler, who is the top Democrat on the judiciary panel, said he would end the investigation in January when Democrats took over the House.

Speaking to reporters after he stepped out of the committee's closed-door interview with former FBI Director James Comey on Friday, Nadler was asked if he plans to end the probe when he takes over as committee chair in January. Cummings also promised to "spend the taxpayer's dollars" in an "appropriate" way.
