This year, that included the hit romantic comedy "Crazy Rich Asians" and anticipated blockbuster "Mary Poppins Returns", as well as the liberal application of the term "comedy" by putting the movies "Green Book" and to an extent "Vice", a dark satire about former Vice President Dick Cheney, in that bracket.

Meanwhile, Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody scored nominations for Best Motion Picture - Drama and Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama for Rami Melek.

This was among four nominations received by The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.

Surprisingly, Netflix did not score a single nomination for the acclaimed update of Mike Flanagan and Shirley Jackson's "The Haunting of Hill House", which seems a shame, as young viewers had nightmares watching this one, and it would have been a thrill to see some of its castmembers in the mix along with AARP qualifiers Roberts, Nicole Kidman, Glenn Close and Willem Dafoe. Gosling, who starred as Neil Armstrong in "First Man", was left out of the best actor in a drama category this year. Spike Lee was nominated for BlacKkKlansman, the second time as best director by the Globes, 30 years after being nominated for Do the Right Thing.

Movies about race, politics and music dominated nominations for the Golden Globe awards on Thursday, setting the stage for the long Hollywood awards season leading up to the Oscars in February. It was still nominated for best screenplay, best director and best foreign language film. Then again, the HFPA also snubbed him for the first "Creed" as well (Stallone won that year for the film). (If it were up to me, she would have been in the best supporting actress category for Boy Erased.) The same goes for Rosamund Pike, who earned raves for her turn in Private War but still felt like she was just orbiting the top five, leaving no room for Viola Davis or Roma's Yalitza Aparicio. Winners in 25 categories - 14 in film and 11 in television - are voted on by the HFPA.

Black Panther and The Walking Dead star Danai Gurira, Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Terry Crews, Mr. Robot's Christian Slater and Leslie Mann of the upcoming film Welcome to Marwen are set to unveil the nominees for this year's Golden Globe Awards Thursday morning. As the first major award show following the Harvey Weinstein revelations and subsequent launch of the #MeToo movement, the usually more frivolous ceremony had an atypical edge of seriousness.

The show will be up against queer favourite Killing Eve for best TV drama, which also saw Sandra Oh get a nomination for best actress in a TV drama.

The duo follows previous hosts Seth Meyers (2018), Jimmy Fallon (2017) and Ricky Gervais (2016, 2012, 2011, 2010), as well as co-hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (2015, 2014, 2013). They were announced Wednesday as hosts to the January 6 ceremony, to be broadcast live on NBC.
