The 2018 edition of the Ballon d'Or ceremony is set to be held on Tuesday, December 3 and the event will be taking place in the French capital of Paris.

Starting from 2008, can you name the players who finished highest each year if we exclude Messi and Ronaldo?

Sky Italia are reporting that Real Madrid's Croatian midfielder Luka Modric will take home the award, on the back of a Champions League winning season punctuated by an unlikely run to last summer's World Cup Final in Moscow.

The 2018 Ballon d'Or victor will be announced by France Football on Monday 3rd December.

Interestingly a few weeks ago France Football had a vote on social media of who people thought should win the award, that would have no influence in the final decision, however, with Messi sweeping the board, the poll suddenly disappeared.

The team's most recent win was a 1-0 triumph over Valencia, a match which snapped Ronaldo's three-match goalscoring streak following finishes against SPAL, AC Milan and Manchester United. Ronaldo's total includes an impressive 15 goals en route to Real Madrid's 13th European Cup.

"I am very surprised that Messi isn't there", he said to Marca.

The Barcelona star will not be on the podium and, it seems, is viewed as the fifth-best player in world football.

Modric has had a tremendous year for both club and country as he won the UEFA Champions League for a record third straight season with Real Madrid before going on to finish runners-up in the FIFA World Cup with Croatia.

The ceremony will begin from the Grand Palais in Paris on Monday evening.
