The company abandoned development of the consumer version of Hangouts more or less previous year.

Given Google's abandonment of the app in terms of development and its presumed eventual death, many have already transitioned away from using it.

Citing a source "familiar with the product's internal roadmap", 9to5Google reported Friday that the end of Hangouts for consumers will arrive "sometime in 2020". Google never revealed the total number of Hangouts users though.

The news doesn't come as a surprise as Google had long ago stopped updating Google Hangouts.

However, Hangouts as part of me Google will continue in the form Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet as both platforms are not going anywhere. After yesterday's rumours that Google would shutter Hangouts for consumers in 2020, it appears that Google has a product manager for Hangouts, and also, that reports of its demise may be premature. However, instead of working on improving Google Talk, the tech company simply chose to kill it and launched Hangouts. In 2016, Hangouts was demoted, if not immediately killed, by Google as it launched a new messaging app called Allo for text and multimedia messages and Duo for video calls. In the consumer market, Google has turned its focus on RCS and its Messages app.
