On Tuesday, he further denied any knowledge of Manafort, his one-time business partner, and Assange meeting one-on-one.

On Tuesday, the Guardian reported that Mr Assange had met former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort several times before the 2016 United States election.

Then-campaign chairman Paul Manafort checks the podium before Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks during an event at Trump SoHo Hotel, June 22, 2016 in New York City.

Citing sources, The Guardian reported that the pair met in 2013, 2015 and in 2016 ahead of the USA presidential election.

A former aide to Donald Trump who is at the centre of the investigation into Russian meddling in the U.S. elections met Julian Assange three times in London, it has been claimed.

The meeting lasted about 40 minutes, according to the Guardian.

"I have never met Julian Assange or anyone connected to him".

While the exact charges against Assange remain unclear, WikiLeaks has served as a vehicle for release of thousands of classified USA military and diplomatic cables.

"Remember this day when the Guardian permitted a serial fabricator to totally destroy the paper's reputation", WikiLeaks tweeted Tuesday morning.

On Monday, the Mueller team said the former aide had breached his plea deal by repeatedly lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Rudy Giuliani, lawyer to President Trump, commented on the Manafort-Assange story, saying it was "unequivocally fake news, I am told".

Although embassy logs reportedly show no evidence of Manafort's visit, the Guardian claims to have seen an internal document written by Ecuadorian intelligence that "lists 'Paul Manaford [sic]' as one of several well-known guests". The Guardian said Manafort's lawyers declined to answer its questions about the visits.

Manafort himself released a statement later Tuesday calling the article "libelous" and claiming he was thinking of suing The Guardian.

Assange has been holed up at the embassy since 2012 out of fear that should he leave, he would be extradited to the USA and face charges for leaking thousands of classified documents. It also mentions "Russians".

The Russia investigation is already investigating how hundreds of stolen emails from the Democratic National Committee came to be published by WikiLeaks.

For more than a year now, Manafort has been at the heart of several unresolved threads of the Mueller investigation.

Manafort, who was convicted on multiple counts of financial fraud over the summer in connection with work he completed in Ukraine as a political consultant, has been in the headlines this week after Mueller claimed the former campaign chairman breached his plea deal.
