But don't let the big post-Thanksgiving shopping day overshadow today's online shopping day, Cyber Monday, which is the biggest online shopping day of the year. For example, the Fire TV Stick (originally $39) is on sale for $24.99 on Amazon and Target, but once you add it to your cart on Target, it drops an additional 15 percent, by $3.75, to $21.24.

The much-hyped marketing day is expected to be the largest United States online shopping day ever, generating $7.8 billion in sales, according to research firm Adobe Analytics, which tracks transactions at most of the top U.S. online retailers. If not backed with the right IT infrastructure, the heavy traffic will lead to headaches such as outages and other technical glitches.

On Black Friday, websites of clothing retailers J.Crew, Lululemon Athletica Inc and home improvement chain Lowe's Cos Inc suffered technical issues because of the surge in orders.

"Despite some of the best deals coming earlier in the holiday season, the Cyber Monday brand has great staying power", said Taylor Schreiner, director of Adobe Digital Insights.

With Toys "R" Us out of the picture this year, Target is offering up to 50% off hundreds of toys online. Amazon (65-inch, 55-inch, 43-inch) has the same deals, and at the time of writing, all are still in stock. The offer is live now on their website.

Adobe Marketing & Customer Insights Vice President John Copeland discusses whether Black Friday sales will hurt Cyber Monday sales.
