At least 29 dead after cruise boat capsizes in Uganda

Explaining how terrifying the ordeal was, Francis said the incident happened not far from Mpatta Sub-County in Mukono district, central Uganda after their departure at around 4 pm.

"Obviously, the operators of this boat will be charged with criminal negligence and manslaughter, if they have not already been punished for their mistake by dying in the accident", Museveni said.

Bodies have been taken to Kampala City Mortuary for post-mortem.

"It is a sad moment". The ferry reportedly had more than than 100 people on board according to some of the survivors.

Local media reports that as many as 66 people were found alive and rescued after the boat disaster.

The boat, on which party-goers were drinking, dancing and listening to music, sank a short distance from the shore off Mutima in Mukono district.

This is because whereas its capacity is for 50 people, it had about 120 passengers on board.

Mr Museveni said Sunday that the private boat owned by a Mr Templa Bissase and his wife was seemingly overloaded.

"Fishermen on two small boats could see that the boat was sinking and went to help". No information was provided by police on how many people may still be missing. "The rescuers died too", he said.

As the rescue mission resumed today, another seven bodies were reportedly retrieved from the waters according to the deputy army spokesman Lt Deo Akiiki.

The boat's passengers, in a party mood, likely panicked when the vessel started to sink, he said.

Rescue efforts were to continue overnight as it is feared others may be trapped under the completely submerged boat.

President Yoweri Kagiuta Museveni has mourned all those that perished in a boat accident that occurred on Lake Victoria yesterday evening.

More than 200 people were killed in a Tanzanian ferry disaster in September, with officials saying it had been dangerously overcrowded.

With a surface area of 70,000 square kilometres (27,000 square miles), the oval-shaped lake is roughly the size of Ireland and is shared by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.
