The decision to honour Rooney with a first cap for two years divided opinion.

But the former Manchester United star has controversially returned in order to promote The Wayne Rooney Foundation, a newly formed charity.

At 20 years and 39 days, Alexander-Arnold became the youngest Liverpool player to score for England since Michael Owen against Luxembourg in September 1999 (19y 264d).

Southgate gave debuts to three players and they all impressed, with Bournemouth forward Callum Wilson's goal capping an industrious performance up front.

England's all-time top scorer Rooney came on as a 58th-minute substitute, to roars from the crowd, with the team 2-0 up thanks to excellent first-half strikes from Jesse Lingard and Trent Alexander-Arnold with his first goal for his country.

England host Croatia at a sold-out Wembley on Sunday in the final UEFA Nations League match.

The 18-year-old has been in fine form for Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund this season netting four times and assisting six in just 11 games.

The DC United striker did come close to adding to his 53 goals when he forced Guzan into an excellent stop late into the game.

"The time Jose Mourinho left me out of the Manchester United team. there are moments when you do doubt yourself". Since the loss at Trinidad and Tobago last October that ended a streak of seven straight World Cup appearances for the U.S., Pulisic had played just once for his country, in a May exhibition against Bolivia near his home in Chester, Pennsylvania.

As planned, Rooney got the chance to add to his 53 global goals and was handed the captain's armband one last time when he entered on 58 minutes. It's a great group of young players who have a really bright future. "He mucked in with the group, trained the same as everyone else, he worked in the five-a-sides and wanted to win everything he was involved in", Southgate said. It's something I'll remember for a long time. "We've had real shoots of progress and achieved some outstanding results", said Southgate.

He had a glorious opportunity to do so in injury-time, but Brad Guzan saved his shot.

"Croatia have shown again their resilience, it sets Sunday up to be a very special tie". The players have been great, seeing how they're working and I'm improving.

"Am I the only one seeing a Lingard goal here?" one fan swiftly wrote - and he was right.
