The couple were due to get married on November 11, but Mr Pratama was among 189 people killed when Lion Air flight JT 610 crashed into the Java sea on October 29, shortly after taking off from Jakarta, Indonesia. "We do not like the fact that a new system was put on the aircraft and wasn't disclosed to anyone or put in the manuals", Weaks told the Times.

United States aviation groups, including the Federal Aviation Authority, say Boeing didn't tell them about a device they added to their 737 MAX aricraft which may have contributed to the deadly Lion Air crash. Boeing have admitted that there was no reference to this safety feature in any of the documentation either. "They said: 'We should do it together, Rio would have to be here'".

Known as the Manoeuvring Characteristics Augmentation System, this feature was added to compensate for particular nuances in the handling of the aircraft. Because MCAS relies on angle of attack data from the aircraft's vane-type sensor, one focus of the Lion Air investigation is on the AoA sensor itself, which appears to have been replaced as faulty prior to the accident.

In response to the fatal crash, the Federal Flight Administration (FAA) has launched a comprehensive review of safety analysis completed by Boeing Co.

The Allied Pilots Association rejected Boeing's assertion that a safety bulletin issued last week was meant to reinforce procedures already in the 737 MAX flight manual.

A union bulletin to pilots at American Airlines Group Inc. said the company hadn't provided details about the system with its documentation about the plane.

"How this happened is definitely something which has to be resolved", said Tajer, who pilots 737s himself. "It makes us question, 'Is that everything, guys?' I would hope there are no more surprises out there". He commented that, "This is not about silos and layers of bureaucracy, this is about knowing your airplane". The company has been relying on revenue gains from faster output of the narrow-body jet to help ease financial strain from introducing its newest wide-body aircraft, the 777X.

There are more than 200 Boeing MAX jets around the world, with orders for more than 4,700, according to Boeing's website.

An AOA sensor is an instrument, similar to a small wind vane, that sits outside the plane just below the cockpit and sends information to its computers about the angle of the plane's nose relative to the oncoming air.

As per the recently issued directive, this could persist for up to 10 seconds, and is so forceful and unexpected that the pilot would have little chance of stopping it happening.

Known as the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, it was added "to compensate for some unique aircraft handling characteristics", according to a bulletin sent by Southwest's flight operations division to its pilots on November 10.

According to a technical log the Lion Air Boeing 737, which had only been in service a few months, suffered instrument problems the day before because of an "unreliable" airspeed reading.

Investigators are working to establish the root cause of the crashThe ongoing investigation. The pilots were attempting to deal with several malfunctions when the crash occurred, the investigators said.
