Democrat leads in last undecided House race

Jordan is a leader of the far-right House Freedom Caucus.

Meadows told reporters on Wednesday that he believes Jordan has "earned" the spot of ranking member on the Judiciary Committee.

McCarthy made his pitch for the job to House Republicans in a recent letter, saying he's is in the best position to lead the party against a Democratic majority, NPR reported. I am proud of their parts of America that are embracing the strengths of these magnificent women, who will lead us forward.

McCarthy, a California Republican, has cultivated a relationship with Mr. Trump.

Elections Wednesday will also determine party leadership in the Senate. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky won another term as majority leader in the Senate, where Republicans appear to have picked up a seat or two.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy is running to take over next year's shrunken caucus in closed-door elections that will set the tone for the new Congress.

While frustration at upward mobility is a widespread gripe among House Democrats, and even some of Pelosi's supporters acknowledge there is not a deep bench to replace her, no one else is yet running for House Speaker.
