Malibu On Fire, Evacuated

The fire erupted on Thursday near the northwest corner of the city of Los Angeles as the region's notorious Santa Ana winds blew harder, triggering an overnight evacuation of 75,000 homes in Los Angeles and Ventura County.

The Woolsey Fire threatening the beachside town is now sweeping through the Santa Monica mountains, after making it across the freeway on Friday morning.

A California fire official said another blaze in northern California almost quadrupled in size overnight.

Intense winds and low humidity are feeding the flames.

"We have over 300 Los Angeles County firefighters here, and as mentioned collectively, that's going to grow, as we continue to battle this fire, as it is headed to the Pacific Ocean", Richardson said. On Friday, part of it was burning into the footprint of a 2013 wildfire, which could slow its spread, Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen said.

About two-thirds of the city of Malibu was ordered evacuated early Friday as a ferocious Southern California's wildfire roared toward the beachside community that is home for many Hollywood celebrities.

Several active fires are burning in parts of Northern California, and further south, a number of fires are centered in the Los Angeles area, according to a California wildfire map. Herrera, who lives in Paradise with her 88-year-old husband, Lou, left a frantic voicemail at around 9:30 a.m. saying they needed to get out.

Investigators with the Butte County Sheriff's Office located the five fatalities in the area of Edgewood Lane in Paradise town of about 30,000 people in Butte County, about 130 km north of California State's capital Sacramento.

Tens of thousands of people are under mandatory evacuation orders and Palley says that the fires in the Santa Monica Mountains, above Malibu, have developed so fast that numerous roads there have become impassable even to firefighters.

Ventura County Fire Department clarified on Twitter that Los Robles Hospital was not being evacuated.

The cause of the fires is unclear, but dry conditions and unpredictable winds have made things difficult for the 2,2000 firefighters working hard to contain them.

"I hope people got out".

Speaking on Thursday, fire captain Scott McLean said: "Pretty much the community of Paradise is destroyed, it's that kind of devastation".

Voluntary evacuations have been added in Ventura County for Lake Sherwood and the area south of Hwy 101 and north of Potrero Road between Westlake Boulevard and Wendy Drive in Thousand Oaks. Pimlott said 40 miles per hour wind started at the outset of the Camp Fire early Thursday. Fire officials said it could take days to figure out how many people died.

The fire, which began early on Thursday, was the fiercest of several wind-driven blazes across California, during what has been one of the worst years for wildfires in the state.

Mandatory evacuations were ordered for Malibu. On Friday, it climbed over the Santa Monica Mountains toward Malibu.

Malibu public schools are also closed. "This is a very risky wind-driven fire".

The 20,000 acre (8,100 hectare) Camp Fire, which started on Thursday near Camp Creek, is being driven west by 35 miles per hour (56 kmh) winds, fire officials said.
