The heir to the Saudi throne denies he was aware of the plot to kill Khashoggi or the attempted cover-up. This led investigators to believe that his dead body was disposed of through the drains as liquid, the paper said.

Yasin Aktay, an advisor to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, suggested last week the body may have been dissolved in acid.

Saudi Arabia has said members of the team which was sent to Istanbul, and returned shortly after the killing, have been arrested along with three others.

Erdogan did not give details of the contents of the tapes but two sources with knowledge of the issue have told Reuters that Turkey has several audio recordings.

Candles, lit by activists, protesting the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, are seen outside Saudi Arabia's consulate, in Istanbul, Turkey, during a candlelight vigil, October 25, 2018.

"They (Saudi officials) also listened to the conversations and they know".

In recent weeks, USA officials, including Defense Secretary James Mattis and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, have called on Saudi Arabia to end airstrikes on Yemen, and are reportedly suspending mid-air refueling of Saudi Arabian military aircraft involved in the airstrikes.

Khashoggi's sons have appealed to Riyadh to return the body of their father so that the grieving family can bury him in a cemetery in the holy city of Medina with the rest of his clan.

Western intelligence agencies, many current and former officials, and most experts on Saudi Arabia have concluded that the operation to kill Khashoggi could only have been carried out with the order of the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

"We gave it to Saudi Arabia", President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at the Ankara airport before departing for Paris for commemorations to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

Last week, however, Turkey said he had been strangled immediately after entering the consulate and his body dismembered "in accordance with plans made in advance".

"The 15 people who came to Istanbul [from Saudi Arabia], who are also among 18 detained by Saudi authorities, surely know who killed Jamal Khashoggi and where his body is".

The Turkish leader insisted Saturday that the 15-member Saudi delegation sent to the consulate "know very well the murderer or murderers".

Khashoggi was killed by a team of 15 Saudis nearly immediately after walking into his country's consulate in Istanbul to obtain documents he required to remarry.

"To the Germans, French, English, we gave it to all of them".
