Opener Rory Burns (nine) disappointed on his test debut and Moeen Ali failed to justify his promotion to number three as Lakmal claimed two wickets in two balls. However, he scored just three runs in the match.

As a whole bowling unit we were excellent. Dhananjaya de Silva's dismissal in the final over before Lunch on the fourth day was a case in point.

Jos Buttler - 6/10 - Made two useful contributions with the bat (38 and 35) and took three good catches.

The Surrey wicketkeeper was not even in the original touring party, a late call-up as cover for the injured Jonny Bairstow, but ended his first day in global cricket with a deeply assured 87 not out to his name and dreams of a second day century when play resumes. The home team won both Tests in crushing fashion then, securing the first victory by a margin of 279 runs and the second by 199 runs. His keeping was exemplary too. However, he was only called upon to bowl 11 overs and took one wicket.

Kaushal was leg before sweeping Leach for 30 and Karunaratne skipped down the pitch and was caught and bowled by Ali for 26. He also keeps the run rate low which builds pressure. He joined Muralitharan and James Anderson to that list.

Herath made his debut at Galle in 1999, got a hat-trick there in 2016 and is one scalp away from a century of wickets at the picturesque venue. Needs to go on to a significant score next time though. "I am just really happy to be sitting here in a position where we can win the game", Jennings said. Chandimal, who was nursing a groin strain, could miss the second test at Pallekele next week. Despite this, he battled to 33 in the first innings.

By the end of the session Dilruwan Perera had rattled the stumps twice more, Jennings cramped on a backfoot cut for a battling 46 and Ben Stokes skittled attempting a messily ambitious slog-sweep.

He was followed into the pavilion by Akila Dananjaya for 8 before Herath was run out for five.

'Foakes has shown he's the best keeper. He did not threaten as much in the second innings.

However, Stewart says the emergence of Foakes, who he has labelled, on more than one occasion, "the best wicketkeeper in the world", as an global player means that the decision will be taken out of Bairstow's hands.

The second match of the three-test series is in Kandy, starting on Wednesday, before the final contest in Colombo from November 23.
