IOS 12.1 to bring Group FaceTime, dual-SIM support

Today following its Brooklyn keynote event, Apple released iOS 12.1, the first major update since September's iOS 12 brought Shortcuts, Screen Time, and more. The new iOS 12.1 update enables more sophisticated portraits with professional-level bokeh. Portrait mode with Depth Control is also available on the TrueDepth camera for selfies.

When the 2017 flagships launched a year ago, Apple said that the "models include hardware updates that allow a more advanced performance management system that more precisely allows iOS to anticipate and avoid an unexpected shutdown".

For the newer iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR, iOS 12.1 will enable Depth Control in camera preview and dual SIM support via eSIM. You'll have to have a word with your network provider and, obviously, stump up some more money each month for a separate plan.

However, a feature that did not arrive in iOS 12 was Group FaceTime that Apple promised would allow up to 32 people to engage in a video call at the same time. Apple promised dual-SIM support by the end of the year, and we have two months before the end of the year.

Adds support for video and audio calls with up to 32 participants simultaneously. It will automatically size each person's image depending upon how active they are in the conversation, based on duration of speech, volume, and motion.

Finally, if you have an iPhone X or later, you'll be able to use Animoji and Memoji in Group FaceTime calls. The participants who are not active appears at the bottom of the screen until they speak. One can tap a specific person's tile and bring them to center as well.

This should be pretty self-explanatory.

In China, Hong Kong and Macau, the new iPhones have physical slots for a second nano-SIM, but in the rest of the world, it's a virtual eSIM.

"This update also includes bug fixes and improvements", said Apple.

Another focus of this update is in adding emoji that represent our global community, and emoji such as a moon cake, a red gift envelope and a nazar amulet are also among the newest batch.

In particular, Apple highlighted new llama, mosquito, kangaroo and lobster characters arriving on the fresh operating system.
