Officials said earlier in the day that the Butler High School student had been brought to a hospital in critical condition.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department stated the single shooter was taken into custody and the weapon was apprehended.

Matthews Police were reporting the shooting is believed to be an "isolated incident".

Officials said the shooting happened in a main hallway after a fight between the suspect and victim.

"We do not have metal detectors in our schools, we do not search our students on the way into school", Wilcox said.

The disagreement occurred in a hallway and there were "many kids in the hallways when it took place", he said in a press conference. The suspected shooter was also not identified. "We will review procedures and security plans and perhaps will do things that are a little more aggressive".

The school is located at 1810 Matthews-Mint Hill Road in Matthews. He said the victim, a friend of his, was shot in the back as he walked away. "I just processed everything what's going on, I saw the gun and I had to run". "The Butler High School community and CMS appreciate the support of the entire community during this hard time", said the post. Classes were proceeding for students who remained on campus.

Matthews Mayor Paul Bailey also offered his condolences to everyone affected at Butler High. "Our schools and students rely on cooperation between and amongst and each other and today that simply wasn't enough".

A witness described how parents, who had no idea the extent of the shooting, were crying as they arrived at the school in response to messages from their children at the school.
