Hours earlier, he took a softer tone at a rally in Wisconsin Wednesday night.

The white powder included in the suspicious packages sent to a number of Democratic leaders over the past few days in a number of locations - and intercepted by authorities before any harm could be done - is said not to present any "biological" threat.

The mail-bomb scare in the US widened on Thursday (local time) as law enforcement officials seized three more suspicious packages - two addressed to former Vice President Joe Biden and one to actor Robert De Niro - and said they were similar to crude pipe bombs sent to former President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and CNN.

The visit comes as law enforcement officials scramble to find the perpetrator of the attempted bomb attacks against a slew of Democratic officials, including former President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Rep. Maxine Waters, along with cable network CNN.

The president spoke to the media and said that he was proud of the work of law enforcement officials for "finding a needle in a haystack".

We can thank the Secret Service for the fact that the explosive devices never got anywhere near Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton.

Clinton, speaking at a Florida fundraiser for congressional candidate Donna Shalala, thanked the U.S. Secret Service for intercepting the package before it reached her suburban New York City home.

The agency tasked with protecting the president and other dignitaries says it has intercepted two packages in Washington and NY.

"Bombers typically like this get caught because they're not sophisticated" and don't cover their tracks, Garrett said.

The NYPD told CBS News that the bomb squad reported to a suspicious package on the third floor, and they evacuated that floor and the second floor. "We are New Yorkers, we are smart, we are tough, we are resilient and we will not allow these terrorist thugs to change the way we live our lives", Cuomo (D) said. At the NY briefing, authorities confirmed that at least some of the packages were distributed through the US mail, and cautioned that there could be additional devices in the postal system.

The device has since been secured and removed for investigation. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, whose return address was on it.

As the scope of the attack became clearer on Wednesday, Mr Trump decried political violence during a scripted event in the White House East Room and other members of the administration said it has no place in American society. "This egregious conduct is abhorrent".

Trump condemned the mailings as "an attack on democracy itself" on Wednesday, but by Thursday had called on the media to stop reporting what he called purposely fake news. That means FBI investigators can "look for patterns such as the device, the technical expertise, the method of mailing, a whole host of great, rich forensic evidence that can be gathered".

The broadcaster's offices in NY were evacuated earlier, but have since-reopened. Which brings us to this other threat, something was discovered being sent to George Soros. But what was inside was alarming: crude pipe bombs wrapped in black tape, with wires sprouting from each end.

Police said the package recovered in Manhattan addressed to De Niro, who insulted Mr Trump at this year's Tony Awards, was similar to other pipe bombs recovered this week.

The pipe bomb hand-delivered to Soros' suburban NY home was loaded with explosive black powder - a material Gomez said is similar to fireworks powder and can be easily acquired in many states. "I have experienced first-hand the effects of political violence, and am committed to using my voice to speak out against it wherever I can". It contained an envelope of white powder that experts were analyzing, Police Commissioner James O'Neill said.

Former US President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were among the targets of suspected package bombs delivered to several high-profile Democrats and CNN, which the Federal Bureau of Investigation said it was investigating as an act of terrorism.
