Lewis Hamilton made to wait for fifth world championship title

Britain's Lewis Hamilton was kept waiting for his fifth Formula One world championship on Sunday after the Mercedes driver finished third in a U.S. Grand Prix won by Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen.

Sebastian Vettel on Saturday acknowledged the "mutual respect" in his world championship fight with Lewis Hamilton ahead of this weekend's potential title showdown. The Finn made a great start, diving down the inside of Hamilton at Turn 1, and then executed two attractive stints to convert into victory. He was on a slightly better tire than us at the end, so naturally a bit of a struggle.

"We had enough speed and we keep it consistent".

"We just need everything now", was the message from Hamilton's race engineer, Pete Bonnington.

"It was a great battle". I saw the red flag.

Vettel took too long to react to the red flags and, in addition to his costly grid penalty, the German was also slapped with two points on his licence. That often leads to an unpredictable and exciting race as teams learn about the behaviour of the tyres in real time, but there is still little doubt it will be a one-stop race.

"Then, let me say, if every time that Kimi receives news of this nature he responds with a pole position, then it would be worth doing it every weekend".

"I think he's been pretty awesome at being able to do what he's done continuously on track for the best part of a decade but also done his own thing away from the track. for him to live the life he's living but stil keep up such a performance, all credit to him".

"It is the first time we have had this ruling in the wet and you literally have to stop 30 or 40 kilometres per hour which I should do next time". Ferrari picked up their game this weekend.

Title leader Hamilton, starting on the supersoft tires, lost out to the ultrasoft-shod Raikkonen at the start.

With the race neutralised as marshals tended to Ricciardo's stricken Red Bull, which had stopped on the exit of the Turn 11 hairpin, Mercedes told Hamilton to do the opposite to Raikkonen under the VSC and so he dived into the pits, committing to a two-stop strategy. They went side by side into Turn 13, but Vettel, with the inside line, made contact and spun himself around and down to 15th place while Ricciardo escaped unscathed.
