John Oliver Taunts Trump Over His ‘Intense Bromance’ With Saudi Crown Prince

During the segment, Oliver brought up WWE's relationship with Saudi Arabia and showed the propaganda-like clips that aired during Greatest Royal Rumble back in April.

"I haven't talked to everybody on the WWE roster but I can tell you that a lot of the people that are scheduled to go to Saudi Arabia; they don't want to go to Saudi Arabia", said Alvarez. It was the first part of a decade-long partnership between WWE and the Saudi General Sports Authority.

Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi was previously general manager and editor-in-chief of Al-Arab News Channel, and has been a very high-profile critic of country's Crown Prince, Mohammad bin Salman and King, Salman of Saudi Arabia.

The weekend saw the Wrestling Observer's Dave Meltzer note that WWE do have a contingency plan in-place should they be forced to change Crown Jewel. Khashoggi entered a Saudi Arabian consulate to pick up paperwork that would allow him to re-marry and has not been seen since. Turkish media reported that the government has audio and video footage confirming that Khashoggi was murdered in the consulate.


WWE released a statement saying they are "currently monitoring the situation".

Senator Chris Murphy of CT, who is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and represents the state WWE is based, has urged them to call off the event.

Female fans were also only allowed to attend if they were accompanied by a male guardian.

Saudi Arabia's stringent laws against both women and the LGBT flies in the face of many performers in the company, not to mention the WWE's audience itself.
