Venom review: Tom Hardy's Marvel monster mash-up an unlikely comic duo

But for all the messiness of this initial effort, Hardy has given them a strong incentive to make it work. The fact that Venom plays everything so safe and by-the-numbers truly hinders it-a frustrating result considering that Hardy is clearly trying to put his all into the character.

"Venom" follows investigative journalist Eddie Brock (Hardy).

"Venom" has its freakish pleasures, including Eddie's assault on a pricey restaurant during the early stages of his possession; the sight of Tom Hardy sitting in a lobster tank eating a live crustacean is one you will not soon forget.

The Symbiote costume bonds itself to its host, granting them superpowers like enhanced strength, speed and regenerative healing abilities.

"We only ever talked about this movie as being PG-13", director Ruben Fleisher added. "Prime among these are the two stars, Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams, who are giving intriguing and appealing performances before the parasite gets into the system and sucks out all the juice from the drama".

Even with low expectations, we have been watching the development of Sony's standalone Venom movie with more than a little interest, if only because it seems like such a weird outlier. There, Eddie Brock was played by Topher Grace as a warped and more cynical take on Peter Parker.

Justin Chang of the Los Angeles Times called Venom "pretty weak poison", and noted that, while it's not quite "terrible", the film "tells a stale, workmanlike origin story, cursorily updated with drive-by references to climate change and fake news, and outfitted with cheaply serviceable visual effects".

But do the end credits of the new Venom movie actually contain a link to the iconic, web-shooting superhero? Of the whole cast, it seems that Riz Ahmed and Tom Hardy are having the most fun with this wooden script. Ahmed is channeling his best 90s villain with mad eyes and inflated ego.

Hardy, 41, who has been busy promoting the eagerly anticipated Marvel flick, in which he takes on the role of the lead character, was asked what his favourite moment was to film. "But nevertheless, would I like to watch a seven-hour version of Venom?". So technically there is a Spider-Man reference in Venom?

"As an actor, what we love doing, not everything is going to make it". Even some comic book nerds barely knew who the Guardians of the Galaxy were before the 2014 movie.

Perhaps the most solid performance in the film is delivered by Ahmed, whose Carlton Drake embodies the kind of megalomaniacal hubris required of a billionaire who believes that his solutions are the only solutions to the world's woes. The PS4 exclusive (sorry, Xbox fans) captures Spidey (and his alter-ego Peter Parker) as I have known him for most of my life: He's a scrappy NY kid, struggling to juggle both the extraordinary responsibilities and opportunities of being a superhero and the mundane challenges of being a socially awkward young man.

Venom is set to hit theaters on October 5, 2018. "And on top of all that, Tom is hilarious, and that was exactly what we needed to bring Venom to life for moviegoers".
