Towns getting $190 million contract extension from Timberwolves

Jimmy Butler requested a trade from the team, which complicates things greatly.

Along with missing media day, Butler is not expected to participate in at least the early portion of training camp, per The Athletic.

It's great to see the majority of Bulls fans finally coming around on Jimmy Butler.

Butler has reportedly told Thibodeau that he was planning to leave Minnesota in free agency next summer anyways, too.

This development contradicts general manager Tom Thibodeau's stance that the Wolves intend to keep Butler despite his happiness.

However, he did not mesh well with Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns. Thibodeau's initial reaction to the trade request was that he wanted to win now, and trading Butler would nearly assuredly bring back a package that would diminish the Timberwolves' chances in the short term, league sources said. The former Bull gave the Timberwolves a list of three teams he's willing to sign an extension with if traded: the Nets, Clippers and Knicks.

The Knicks have maintained both publicly and privately that they will remain patient in their pursuit of stars - a change from experience - and will not trade first round picks. They don't want to rush into a deal, but they also don't want to start the season with the discord and awkwardness of Butler still being on the roster.

Every locker room that Jimmy Butler walks into ends up falling apart before he leaves.

Butler had once imagined playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, but LeBron James' arrival as the franchise's cornerstone made it less appealing for Butler in the prime of his career, league sources said.

Butler's ability to partner on the Clippers with a second star player in a deep summer free-agency market holds a strong appeal to Butler, league sources said. At this point, however, it appears it would be best for all parties if Butler is moved as soon as possible.

Butler and Towns led the way on the court but it's clear now they did not click off the court.
