Aigner said the flu was widespread across Iowa during the 2017-2018 season.

"A live vaccine is going to have actual particles of the virus, but it has been reduced down to where it will not actually cause the flu", said Dr. Livingston.

The Richland County Health Department has scheduled the annual Mass Flu Shot Clinic on October 4, from 10 a.m.to 6 p.m. Flu shots are also available during normal clinic hours for those who can not attend on October 4th.

Health officials recommend that almost all Americans get flu vaccinations to blunt the impact of a disease that annually infects millions.

The most common viruses are those of Types A and B for which everyone must be vaccinated. "Even if it is not a ideal match for all this year's flu strains, the flu vaccine will provide some protection and reduce your chances of needing to be hospitalized if you do get sick". It typically takes about two weeks for the vaccine to build antibodies and begin offering protection.

The flu vaccine is covered by most insurance plans but Margaret Mary Health recommends patients call their insurance company in advance to verify coverage. You're much more likely to experience a bad reaction to the flu than you are to react negatively to the vaccine.

The impact of the influenza virus can vary from person to person, while some might get away with rest and home remedies, others might need more rigorous treatment and even hospitalization; some severe cases might even lead to death.

Consumer Reports notes that while the nasal flu vaccine spray is back on the CDC's list of recommended vaccines for 2018 through 2019, it's not the first choice for children, per the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). "No trivalent recombinant vaccine will be available this season", the CDC said.

Five companies make flu vaccine for the USA market. But officials warn that it's still better to get a flu shot than risk getting the flu without one.

At the open forum, Marzouki said one has to get immunised every year because the flu virus mutates.

Of the 180 children who died in the past year, 80 percent had not been vaccinated during the season, the CDC said. "So those of us that are healthy individuals, to be able to get it, will protect those individuals that are not able to receive the vaccine".
