The competition's all-time leading goalscorer was sent off just half an hour into his debut in the tournament for new club Juventus after appearing to briefly pull the hair of defender Jeison Murillo.

He said: "I would like to take a moment to clear the air regarding the comments I made after last night's game".

"So I hope afterwards UEFA will watch the replays and that we can have something positive for him because he does not deserve it".

Ronaldo left the pitch in tears following his red card upon his return to Spain.

"I'll only say that in this sort of occasion VAR would help, It's disappointing because now we'll lose him for a few games and instead if there had been VAR it would have been seen that it wasn't a sending-off offense", Allegri said.

Can was adamant the decision the referee's decision was wrong, writing: "My intention was to stick up for a team-mate regarding a wrong decision which could have affected our game".

Article 15 of UEFA's regulations states that bans of more than one game are for offences such as abusive language towards a match official, serious assault or for receiving a caution or red card on goal.

"I sincerely apologise if any of the comments I made caused any harm".

Women play football too, Emre.

Juventus manager Max Allegri is adamant that the decision would have been overturned had VAR been available to consult in the Old Lady's Group H opener.

"He was sad after the match, very sad, and we were all sad for him". "He needs to rise above it and focus on Sunday, even if these things leave a bitter taste in the mouth", said the coach.
