Hurricane Florence lashes Carolinas, heavy rain leads to floods

"While we expect an AccuWeather Local StormMax of 40 inches of rain, extensive inland flooding and storm surge flooding from Florence, Hurricane Harvey unleashed more than 60 inches of rain locally centered around the United States' fourth largest city, Houston, which has a population of 2.3 million".

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 80 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 195 miles.

Florence is forecast to move near or over the coast of southern North Carolina and northeastern SC in the hurricane warning area Thursday night and Friday. Heavy rain, storm surge, damaging winds, rough surf and isolated tornadoes will be possible, especially in eastern North Carolina.

More than 1 million people had been ordered to evacuate the coasts of the Carolinas and Virginia and thousands have moved to emergency shelters.

WXII Meteorologist Brian Slocum warned residents to not to take the downgrade to a Category Two hurricane lightly as the storm will still bring with it strong winds and a destructive storm surge. Other residents have told CNN they're not evacuating because emergency shelters won't accept pets.

The center said that a gauge in Emerald Isle, North Carolina, recently reported 6.3 feet (1.92 meters) of inundation. This rainfall would produce catastrophic flash flooding and prolonged significant riverflooding, the hurricane center said. Airlines cancelled almost 1000 flights and counting. It's expected to make landfall later today.

"We're just trying to plan for the future here, not having a house for an extended period of time", David Garrigus said.

It's unclear exactly how many people fled, but more than 1.7 million people in the Carolinas and Virginia were warned to clear out.

"I can't emphasise enough the potential for unbelievable damage from wind, storm surge and inland flooding". Tropical storm force winds and hurricane force winds could last for a duration of hours.

Services and flights have been suspended on Thursday and Friday at Wilmington International Airport on North Carolina's coast. Florence's center will approach the North and SC coasts late Thursday and Friday. He said one in four deaths in these types of storms are caused by the extreme rainfall.

Duke Energy Co. said Florence could knock out electricity to three-quarters of its 4 million customers in the Carolinas, and outages could last for weeks.

Melody Rawson evacuated her first-floor apartment in Myrtle Beach and arrived at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Georgia, to camp for free with three other adults, her disabled son, two dogs and a pet bird. North Carolina-Virginia border to Cape Charles Light and Chesapeake Bay south of New Point Comfort.

A hurricane watch is in effect for Edisto Beach, SC, to South Santee River, SC.

This vulnerable area has been under mandatory-evacuation orders since Wednesday night at 8 p.m., and those who are choosing to ride out the storm have been under a mandatory curfew since that time, to keep people inside. "And by that I mean the teams and families but also the allotment of resources used for the game that could be better used somewhere else", Hunt said in a statement.

In the tiny community of Sea Breeze near Wilmington, Roslyn Fleming, 56, made a video of the inlet where her granddaughter was baptized because "I just don't think a lot of this is going to be here" later.
