This year he's spent millions on ads and, intentionally or not, moved to the left on issues such as legalizing marijuana, banning plastic bags, returning voting rights to former inmates and addressing conditions in New York City public housing.

Attacked for his cozy relationships with New York's political elite and state capital insiders, Cuomo, whose father Mario Cuomo served as the state's governor for three terms himself, nevertheless dominating wide stretches of the upstate region and even large portions of New York City, where Nixon was expected to fare better with progressive voters.

In an interview on Tuesday with the Time On Politics reporter Lisa Lerer, Nixon said of the mailer: "I thought it was disgusting and cynical and really surprising that Andrew Cuomo's New York State party would stoop to this kind of fear-mongering and lies".

"If you hock the house on Cynthia Nixon you will be homeless on Friday", Mr. Sheinkopf said. A former top aide was found guilty in March of felony corruption charges, including for soliciting more than $300,000 in bribes from a couple of companies doing state business. Cuomo has also called it a mistake. She called herself a democratic socialist and pointed to recent congressional primary victories by New York's Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Massachusetts' Ayanna Pressley as evidence that underdog challengers can defy the odds.

At their sole debate, tensions between Cuomo and Nixon boiled over.

Attorney general candidate Zephyr Teachout, who launched an unsuccessful primary bid against Cuomo in 2014, has been endorsed by Sen. Dealing with state corruption was the only issue that likely Democratic primary voters saw Nixon doing a better job on than Cuomo in the September 10 Siena poll, 42-39 percent. Though she's always been an activist for her favored causes of education and same-sex marriage, running for office is new to her. Ethics reforms and "the fact that all of these sexual harassment are being handled by panels by men in Albany" also show Cuomo's weaknesses, Dawidziak said. "I think it was inappropriate".

Cuomo's advocacy for same-sex marriage, gun control and other progressive causes might bolster him against Nixon. "The new voices that we've seen rising up in places around the country, it's a question whether they're a statewide force or just concentrated in some urban areas" Cunningham said.

Despite the attempts to to have the Post publish the accusation, which is central to the Democratic Party mailer that targeted 7,000 households, Cuomo has vehemently denied he knew about the mailer. And despite Nixon's efforts, polls showed several key Democratic voting blocs remained loyal to the incumbent, including African-Americans, young voters and women.

Not only does he need to win big, but his lieutenant governor, Kathy Hochul, is facing a tight race. "Polls close around 8PM".
