Fire officials say they don't expect to have containment of the fire, which started on Wednesday, until at least September 22. "Fire activity is beginning to back down in this area as it transitions into lighter fuels", fire officials said.

The Delta Fire, which broke out on Wednesday afternoon, tripled its size by Thursday morning, and by Thursday evening, it spread over more than 8,900 hectares without being contained at all.

"They were the largest fires, and as soon as you bought those fires under control, they could re-deploy those firefighters to other areas within the larger area.up to Oregon, Washington and then down to Southern California". Orange circles have burned in the past 12 to 24 hours, and yellow circles have burned within the past 48 hours.

On the fire's southeast side, near Riverview, firefighters are planning to use Middle Salt Creek as their southernmost control line.

The Shasta County Sheriff's Office has issued mandatory evacuations for residents along the Interstate 5 corridor north of Redding.

On the side affecting Trinity County, the fire continues to progress to the west toward Trinity Lake, where multiple structures are threatened. As of Thursday, the Delta Fire had burned more than 15,000 acres.

"It's a marathon that just keeps getting longer and longer", said J Olsen, a firefighter with Central Calaveras Fire and Rescue who worked the Mendocino Complex fire.

The fire forced the chamber to cancel its annual State of Jefferson Brewfest for the first time in 26 years, Dinjes said. Drivers can take I-5 South to Mount Shasta.

California Department of Transportation spokeswoman Denise Yergenson said that section of I-5 will remain closed through the weekend.

Total personnel assigned to the Delta fire number 1,869.

The stretch of highway closed Wednesday as flames flanked the roadway and left the roadway littered with burnt and abandoned trucks. Some flames reached 300 feet in height, according to a U.S. Forest Service incident report.

Trucking companies expect snowstorms in winter to interrupt the flow between California and OR, but a wildfire shutting down Interstate 5 for days wasn't something shippers OR their customers were expecting before Wednesday's Delta fire broke out between Dunsmuir and Shasta Lake.
