McCain lost his battle with brain cancer August 25 at age 81.

Thousands of Arizonans on Wednesday flocked to the state Capitol Building in Phoenix, where the Republican senator laid in state. At a memorial service on Thursday at Northern Phoenix Baptist Church, former Vice President Joe Biden spoke highly of McCain, saying he "always thought of John as a brother". McCain and Obama chose to duke it out over facts and their simply differing political platforms.

"When people of that stature have an opportunity to think ahead and wanting to be together it really is a statement of friendship and support and integrity", said Jacobs, whose father served with McCain's father, U.S. Navy Adm. John Sydney McCain Jr., on submarines during World War II.

Mr Obama told the congregation: "We come to celebrate an extraordinary man, a warrior, a statesman, a patriot who embodied so much that is best in America".

In separate eulogies, Obama and Bush also delivered pushback to Trump that was more subtle than Meghan McCain's but unmistakable nonetheless.

"America is better than this", Bush said, invoking McCain's intolerance of "bigots and swaggering despots".

The week's memorials, planned mostly by McCain himself in his final year of life, often seemed crafted to draw a contrast between the senator and a man of very different temperament and values with whom he often feuded: Donald Trump.

It was a set of values that should serve as a reminder, he said: "If we're ever tempted to forget who we are, to grow tired of our cause, John's voice will always come as a whisper over our shoulder: 'We're better than this".

John McCain is being laid to rest at the U.S. Naval Academy following a five-day series of memorial events that served as a final call to arms for a nation he warned could lose its civility and sense of shared goal. "Everybody should take a week or two weeks to learn about John McCain's life".

McCain's running mate in the 2008 presidential election, Sarah Palin, also remembered the late senator as an "American original" in a.

But Meghan McCain took a not-so-subtle dig at the president Saturday, seemingly using his slogan, "Make America Great Again", against him. But she, a populist firebrand with similarities to Trump, was not invited to any of the services.

He answered the highest of callings to do something that was bigger than he was by serving his country during a time of war, Obama said.

"I never traveled with a colleague who was better to our enlisted or harder on our generals", said Pence, whose son is a Marine.

In the early 1990s, Yeary talked with McCain on video about his experience as a prisoner of war in Vietnam for more than five years and how his faith help sustain him.

During Meghan McCain's speech, she struggled to hold back tears, but appeared to make good on what she said was her father's desire for her to show the world her toughness in her eulogy. Many held their hands over their hearts and waved American flags and applauded loudly; some shouted "God bless you". McCain will be buried next to a Naval Academy classmate and lifelong friend, Chuck Larson, according to his wishes.

The White House did not answer questions about whether Trump played golf or if he watched the service from afar.
