US Open: Federer slams umpire in Kyrgios victory

Kyrgios posted on Instagram after the victory, using a photo of him cupping his ear to the crowd, to which Murray cheekily replied: "When you going to announce mohamed lahyani as your new coach?".

Kyrgios said: "I'm not sure it was encouragement".

But Kyrgios said the pep talk "didn't help me at all" and said his opponent had "let me back into the second set".

The freaky scene went viral on social media as Lahyani addressed the 30th seed for almost a minute and at one point was heard saying, "I'm trying to help you". During a changeover, Lahyani left his chair - a rare sight in Grand Slam tennis - to speak to Kyrgios, leaning with hands on knees while saying, "I want to help you".

Pierre-Hugues Herbert launched a scathing attack on Lahyani after he stepped down from his chair in the second-round match and spoke to Kyrgios about his performance.

"Clearly", Federer said, "when you play that way and you lose, it's always, like, you feel like he's so much to blame".

"It's not the umpire's role to go down from the chair", Federer said.

The 30th-seeded Kyrgios has played close matches against Federer - victor of a record 20 Grand Slam men's singles title - in all three of their previous meetings.

"Lahyani was concerned that Kyrgios might need medical attention. Just call the trainer to the court and I'll try".

Nick Kyrgios has, however, notched a win previously over Roger Federer.

'I haven't seen it, as I say.

'But everybody who knows Mohamed knows as well he's quite different from the others.

During an occasionally confrontational and sarcastic exchange with reporters, Kyrgios laughed at the suggestion that he had received coaching or a pep talk from Lahyani. Although Kyrgios later denied it in the press conference, the talk worked wonders for him as he not only claimed the second set in a tie break but also won the next two sets to win the match.

Cilic - the 2014 champion - dashed into the third round with a ruthless 6-2 6-0 6-0 drubbing of Hubert Hurkacz to set up a showdown with in-form Australian youngster Alex de Minaur.

Wimbledon women's champion Angelique Kerber kept her bid for a second US Open title on track, outlasting Sweden's Johanna Larsson 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.

Novak Djokovic wasted a match point in the third set, before going on to win 6-1, 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-2 against Tennys Sandgren at the U.S. Open to reach the third round. I think this was not his job.

Fognini, the husband of 2015 US Open champion Flavia Pennetta, was kicked out of the US Open doubles tournament previous year after vulgarly insulting a female chair umpire during a first-round loss in singles.

"I mean, like, I don't have a coach". Both could be on tap at the US Open, Federer needed a few swigs of water on another steamy day at the Open and he played like a former champion set to uncork a celebratory bottle of bubbly. I haven't had a coach for, like, years.

"It was a conversation, and coversations can change mentality". "Can you just stay out here for like two minutes?" I umpired thousands of matches.

"I go into that match with zero expectation".
