No. 2 Roger Federer stirs racket in win over Nick Kyrgios

Roger Federer says a stretching forehand victor around the net post that left opponent Nick Kyrgios open-mouthed in disbelief ranks as one of the greatest shots of his career.

Federer had the luxury of a two-set lead when the two produced their most entertaining exchanges. "He came out firing a lot of aces and feeling good".

The match was not only an intriguing contrast in styles but also in temperament, with Federer, tennis's ultimate good guy, taking on Kyrgios, the sport's undisputed bad boy.

"At 3-all, love-40, if I take one of those points, the match is wide open", Kyrgios said. "When he gets in front, there's not much you can do".

The defending men's champion Rafael Nadal reached his fourth Grand Slam quarterfinal of the season, and 36th of his career, by getting past Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-4, while No. 11 John Isner of the US made it that far at Flushing Meadows for the first time since 2011.

The third round was the end of the line for men's and women's fourth seeds from Germany - Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber.

Millman's US Open began against Jenson Brooksby, a 17-year-old wild card who earned his spot in the main draw by winning the USTA Boys' under-18 National Championship, but could not match Millman, who won 6-4 6-2 6-0. Zverev still has never made the fourth round in visits to NY after being beaten 6-7 (1), 6-4, 6-1, 6-3 by Philipp Kohlschreiber in an all-German matchup, while Joao Sousa defeated Pouille 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5).

- Kiki Bertens who lost to Marketa Vondrousova after being asked if Madison Keys can reach the final for a second successive season.

When it caught the net, Federer took full advantage, breaking Kyrgios for a fourth time before closing out the match the very next game.

Much was made of Kyrgios' previous match, in which chair umpire Mohamed Lahyani climbed out of his seat to have a chat with the 23-year-old player about whether he was giving his best effort while trailing by a set and a break. It is sensational and I can't believe Kyrgios got there.

"You have sometimes days where you are trying everything, but it's not really working as you wish", she said. There he beat Mikhail Kukushkin 6-4 4-6 6-1 6-3 to claim his place in the second week.

Millman's victory vaulted him into the second week of a major for the first time.

Suarez Navarro, seeded 30th, next faces 2006 champion Maria Sharapova, who defeated 2017 French Open victor Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-2.

- Dominika Cibulkova, who measures up at 5ft 3ins (1.60m), has found a soulmate in tennis's land of the giants in men's player Diego Schwartzman who is just 5ft 7ins (1.70m).
