A public service is set to take place Thursday at North Phoenix Baptist Church in Phoenix.

Biden, though, said that politics wasn't what was most important to McCain, but rather the underlying values.

Michael Fellars was among those awaiting the motorcade outside the church Thursday.

"I pray you take some comfort knowing that because you shared John with all of us your whole life, the world now shares with you the ache of John's death", Biden said.

Biden also served as one of McCain's pallbearers, carrying his casket into the North Phoenix Baptist Church.

"It takes so much from those we love and from the families who love them that in order to survive we have to remember how they lived, not how they died", Biden said.

Meghan McCain will speak at this service, and son Jimmy McCain will read a poem.

Grant Woods, McCain's former chief of staff, delivered what sounded like a veiled shot at Trump, noting that McCain "wouldn't stand by" when people tried to stamp on the Bill of Rights, "including the First Amendment".

As a veteran of the Marine Corps, Fellars said he was most impressed with McCain's advocacy on behalf of people who serve in the military. "I didn't suffer" as he did, Endress said.

In his last hours, McCain turned down further medical treatment.

Sen. John McCain's body has arrived to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol rotunda, beginning three days of Washington area memorials that will trace McCain's long career in reverse - from the halls of the Senate to the grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.

He pointedly did not invite President Trump, who had repeatedly mocked and belittled the respected GOP senator, first saying he wasn't a war hero because he was captured and later attacking him for not voting to repeal Obamacare.
