The first smartphone to be powered by the Kirin 980 chipset will be Huwaei's Mate 20 series which is expected to be launched next month. The company began Friday by hosting a keynote address at IFA 2018, during which it announced the new Kirin 980 SoC.

AI is seemingly synonymous with Huawei and the Kirin 980 packs in even more punch when it comes to on-device - local - AI tasks.

It's also the first SoC to include Cortex-A76 cores and it has a Mali-G76 GPU. As seen with Huawei in recent times, the Kirin 980 boasts of numerous Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities.

The TSMC 7nm process technology enables Kirin 980 to pack 6.9 billion transistors within a "1 square cm die size", up by 1.6 times from the previous generation. Mali-G76 also features an innovative clock boosting technology that utilises AI to intelligently identify gaming workloads and adjust resource allocation for optimal gaming performance.

While the Huawei P20 Pro has impressive camera performance, it said it further improved the ISP on the new Kirin 980, giving it higher data throughput and better multi-camera support.

Kirin 980 adopts a new pipeline dedicated to processing video captures, allowing the camera module to shoot videos with 33 percent shorter delay, Huawei informed. It also gets new HDR features, new noise reduction algorithms, better motion tracking, and more.

In addition to sheer performance, Huawei is also focusing on AI, with dual NPU units which are claimed to provide up to 220 percent faster image recognition, allowing it to recognize up to 4,500 images per minute.

The significant upgrades offered by the Kirin 980 definitely has me curious about what Huawei has planned for the Mate 20.

In regards to connectivity, the 980 has the world's first modem supporting LTE Cat.21, which has a peak download speed of 1.4Gbps.
