McCain's daughter Meghan sobbed openly as her father's casket was placed on the Arizona state seal where it will be displayed for the public until Thursday.

Inside, the public will later be able to pay its respects, following a private ceremony to take place inside the rotunda of the state Capitol for Arizona officials. McCain's widow, Cindy McCain, walked behind, arm-in-arm with her sons Jack and Jimmy, who like their father, both served in the military.

The death of Senator John McCain has left his Republican Party ever more firmly in the hands of Mr Donald Trump, without a voice willing to challenge the United States president's most extreme statements and policies.

Former Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl said he had been with McCain across the world and he had better instincts on when to assert US power than anyone else he knew.

Despite being a Republican, Schaefer said McCain was known for being controversial within his own party.

The single-file procession through the Arizona Capitol rotunda, where McCain's flag-draped coffin was lying in state, stretched across the statehouse plaza and widened to two or three abreast as it extended down adjacent streets. The U.S. flag over the White House was lowered to half-staff Saturday evening and Sunday.

They took shelters from the hot sun under tents erected by security teams while volunteers filled coolers with ice and water bottles.

His daughter, Meghan, fought unsuccessfully to hold back her tears.

Kassandra Morales, 44, stood with her sons, 8 and 2 years old.

In a statement, the president acknowledged that he and McCain had not always seen eye-to-eye but said he would keep the flag lowered nonetheless. That time, ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl asked the president if he considers McCain, who was tortured during his captivity during the Vietnam War, a hero.

"Two names you won't see on the guest list: Trump and Palin", says a Capitol Hill source with knowledge of the funeral plans. "I brought my children here to show them what a real hero was".

"We definitely have lost a strong advocate, so we'll need someone who is going to step up to the plate", Ms Hatch said.

A McCain family spokesperson said the Capitol doors would remain open as long as there are people in line preparing to honor John McCain.

For some Arizona residents, McCain has been a political fixture their entire lives.

Davis said that the senator would frequently do early morning media interviews to get his message out, despite the time difference between Arizona and NY or Washington, and then do a full day of work.

Among the pallbearers will be Democratic former vice president Joe Biden, ex-senator Russ Feingold, former NY mayor Michael Bloomberg and actor Warren Beatty.

Musical choices include a performance of Amazing Grace by the Brophy Student Ensemble and a recessional to My Way by Frank Sinatra.

The first time the day's media pool - the rotating group of reporters that monitor a president's movements and some events - tried to get the president's thoughts about McCain's death came during a late-morning Oval Office announcement of a preliminary trade pact with Mexico.
