DeSantis Walks Back "Monkey It Up" Comment Regarding Gillum

But if Kemp and DeSantis win because of Trump's lingering appeal and because the Democrats' lurch to the left will have squandered their chances for victory, then despite the Manafort and Cohen verdicts and threats of impeachment, no one should write off Trump's chance for a second term. "That was absolutely a racist, disgusting statement". But I don't think middle of the ground wins anymore.

The statement came just hours after DeSantis and Gillum won their respective primaries, setting up a gubernatorial race that has been described as a proxy for the populist versus progressive tug-of-war over the soul of the American electorate.

The DeSantis campaign said it would be "absurd" to characterize his remarks as racist.

In a tweet Wednesday, Trump says McSally is "an extraordinary woman".

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, DeSantis said, is "the most liberal candidate that the Democratic Party has ever nominated in the state of Florida by a country mile in a governor's race".

It's possible based on those subpoenas that the Federal Bureau of Investigation is trying to make the case that Corey, who served briefly as Gillum's campaign treasurer during his 2014 mayoral run, engaged in a pay-for-play scheme with local officials in exchange for their vote to expand the CRA's jurisdiction. He has the backing of Sen.

The governor's race, in a state sure to be a battleground in the 2020 presidential election, will essentially be a referendum on Trump.

If Gillum becomes governor in Florida and Democrats win majority control of the U.S. House in the midterm elections, his victory nearly certainly means the Democrats will lose whatever inhibitions they may have about impeaching the president. Do you want an apology from Congressman DeSantis?

Worse, DeSantis earlier this year defended an attendee at one of his rallies who shouted that the nominee should "bring back the hanging tree" in Florida and noted he had "a tree and a rope in [his] backyard" for Joseph P. Smith, a man accused of raping and killing an 11-year-old girl before his conviction was overturned.

Gillum's victory could further energize black voters in a year when Democrats are already counting on high turnout among minorities to buoy the party in the November election. He ran for the Senate in 2016 but dropped out when Republican Sen. Marco Rubio shut down his presidential campaign and ran for re-election. He had momentum, which was evident by an event he held with Sanders this month in Tampa that drew about 1,000 people and raised eyebrows.

Under Gillum's watch as mayor, the Federal Bureau of Investigation served subpoenas, seeking tens of thousands of documents. Orlando-area businessman Chris King also ran, and finished last. Gillum has said he's not a target.

In 2014, Gillum was elected mayor of Tallahassee with 76 percent of the vote. Bernie Sanders, who identifies himself as a democratic socialist. "We now rank 47th in America in average instructional staff salary", said Gillum.

Their policy differences are pronounced: DeSantis is pro-gun, and anti-tax; Gillum boasts about beating the National Rifle Association in a lawsuit and is calling for an increase in corporate taxes.

Gillum didn't make race an issue in the primary. Graham had a built-in fundraising network as a former congresswoman and the daughter of a popular Florida governor and senator, while two other top candidates were self-funded.

"I think he made the effort to reach out to real folks", Thompson said.
