Although he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer, McCain returned to the Senate to vote on healthcare legislation on July 25, 2017, delivering a critical vote that prevented the repeal of Obamacare.

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, who served for years in the Senate with McCain said in a statement that "no one is more worthy of the word "hero" than John McCain".

The president's statement comes after the two Republican leaders maintained a strained relationship since Trump suggested in 2015 the Vietnam veteran and prisoner of war was not a war hero. McCain never softened on his opposition to the USA use of torture, even in the recalibrations of the post-9/11 world. In a July statement, McCain lashed out at the president after Trump said during a meeting in Helsinki with Russian president Vladimir Putin that he accepted Russia's claim that that they did not meddle in the United States presidential election. Additionally, his courage, perseverance and ability to overcome adversity, in every facet of his life, will continue to inspire us all.

Graham said that he would "need time to absorb this" but that the McCain's family "are in my prayers". But, to me, more than anything, John was a friend.

McCain announced that he would instead vote for "some good conservative Republican who is qualified to be president.". "John McCain's sacrifice and the sacrifices made by all our POWs and MIAs must never be forgotten".

Following his 2008 presidential loss, McCain exercised his influence as the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee to support military intervention in the Syrian Civil War and in 2013 became the first US senator to visit Syrian rebels. "God bless John McCain". "Ann and I will miss him a great deal", Romney wrote. "Thank you Senator McCain for your service to the nation", the first lady tweeted.

McCain, became a public figure at age 31 when his bed-bound image was broadcast from North Vietnam in 1967.

The back and forth banter continued for the next two years, as Trump repeatedly launched public attacks - often times on Twitter - at McCain. "We're getting nothing done", he said.

That made him the unlikely saviour of the signature legislative achievement of Barack Obama, the man who beat him for president in 2008.

Trump says on Twitter, "Our hearts and prayers are with you!"

He has always been surrounded by strong women-his wife and my friend Cindy, his mom, and his daughters.

McCain had represented Arizona in the Senate since 1987.

McCain had an unsuccessful run for president as a self-styled maverick Republican in 2008 but lost to Democrat Barack Obama, who went on to become the first black U.S. president. He was defeated by Illinois Senator Barack Obama.

Bill Clinton says he is grateful to McCain for his leadership in helping the USA normalize relations with Vietnam during his presidency.

Biden's book is about his late son Beau, and his battle against the very same brain cancer that afflicted McCain.

His wife, Cindy McCain tweeted, "My heart is broken".

"A number of times they were strong in their tactics trying to get me to possibly embarrass my father and our country", McCain said.

A dark period for McCain came as one of the "Keating Five " group of senators accused of improperly intervening with federal regulators to help political contributor and bank executive Charles Keating, whose Lincoln Savings and Loan failed in 1989 at a cost to taxpayers of US$3.4 billion (S$4.64 billion).
