"And just to clarify", Madonna wrote in the accompanying caption, "I was asked to present video of the year by MTV!"

This did not sit well with many of Franklin's fans, who took issue with Madonna focusing so much on herself, as opposed to Franklin. I did not intend to do a tribute to her!.

"An iconic entertainer, powerful civil rights leader and a lovely spirit who I am privileged to call friend", Lawrence said in a statement. It was a truly weird trainwreck to watch, and Twitter isn't letting Madonna get away with the lack of R-E-S-P-E-C-T. I shared part of my journey and thanked Aretha for inspiring me along the way.

Born March 25, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee, Franklin and her family moved to Detroit when she was 4, where her father became a prominent black Baptist preacher.

Monday's VMAs were surprisingly sparse in tributes to Franklin, who died Thursday.

"You do not disrespect an ICON like that".

"Queen of Soul" passes away after battle with pancreatic cancer; Fox News looks back at the life and legacy of the music legend. Many complained that both Madonna and MTV were disrespectful of Franklin. I Love Camila! I love my dress! AND.

A few of the star's die-hard fans managed to shine a ray of light on the situation, though, including one who called the tribute a "Great speech!"
