NYU medical school to cover tuition costs for all students

NYU School of Medicine announced Thursday it will provide all current and future students full-tuition scholarships to attend medical school.

Fresne added that it is too soon to tell if other medical programs will follow in NYU's footsteps in eliminating tuition, but it could be a trend for medical schools moving forward.

To be sure, applications to medical schools exceed the available seats-the admission rate was just over 41 percent in the most recent application cycle. While it must be easier for a moneyed institution like NYU to offer full-tuition scholarships, it is reportedly the first school of its caliber to do so (according to NYU, that is).

With high medical education costs, some graduates choose to pursue more lucrative specialties, creating a shortage in lower-paying fields.

According to an article in U.S. News and World Report, medical schools have said that an applicant who expresses genuine interest in a medical field where doctors are scarce stands to get more favorable consideration than an applicant who does not express such an interest.

The letter goes on to say, "NYU takes seriously the issue of college cost, and its impact on students and families".

Current and future students in our MD degree program celebrate after the announcement at White Coat that they'll be receiving full-tuition scholarships. By providing tuition-free medical education, NYU School of Medicine is leaving students to pay only for housing, fees and the cost of living.

Graduates move towards higher-paying areas of medicine over paediatrics, primary care or gynaecology due to their "staggering student loans".

Tuition for NYU School of Medicine in the coming year, which is now covered under the scholarships, is $55,018.

Few medical schools have managed to cover tuition for a wide swath of students. Already have $450 million of the needed $650 million. Of those in debt, the median amount was $192,000, the group says.

"A population as diverse as ours is best served by doctors from all walks of life, we believe, and aspiring physicians and surgeons should not be prevented from pursuing a career in medicine because of the prospect of overwhelming financial debt", he said in a statement. "You have no idea how important this is", one person tweeted, noting that their boss has been a pediatric physician for more than 20 years and still has student loans. The university's school of medicine says it will make tuition free for all students.

This historic initiative was made possible by more than 2,500 supporters, including trustees, alumni, and friends.
