A shooting rampage last month in that city left two people dead. Then I heard another sound that had a different pitch to it.

"Not enough can be said about the courageous efforts shown today and everyday by members of the Fredericton Police Force, the first responders involved, and all those who respond to the call for help".

"Please appreciate this is a hard time for their families and our colleagues", Fredericton police said on Twitter. "Being on lockdown was very freakish because I leave my door unlocked most of the time". "I'm on my floor", he said. "Of course, I was calling my husband frantically telling him to lock the's been very scary".

The shooting is said to have happened on Brookside Drive just after 7am local time (8pm AEST).

"I hear more shots and looked out and there's two police officers on the ground".

Heavily-armed police, paramedics and firefighters quickly descended on the scene and a lockdown of the neighborhood was ordered, trapping some early risers in daycare facilities, coffee shops and other businesses. "I recognize that they caught the person and he is in the hospital".

Donavan said she has lived in her apartment for almost four years and that the area is very peaceful.

Police in Fredericton, a city of about 56,000 that is the capital of the province of New Brunswick, said in a post on Twitter the incident was continuing and there were multiple fatalities.

Authorities in the city of Fredericton urged people in the Brookside neighborhood, where residents reported waking to the sounds of dozens of shots, to remain in their homes, describing it as an "active incident" on Twitter.

UDPATE: At this time we can confirm that we have one suspect in custody.

"Police still have the crime scene contained and will be working the investigation for some time", the tweet said. A prayer vigil was planned in Fredericton for Friday evening.

In June 2014, RCMP Constables Doug Larche, Fabrice Gevaudan and Dave Ross were killed in a shooting rampage by Justin Bourque. The shooting spree led to a 28-hour manhunt, and shocked the nation.
