Team India skipper finally managed to conquer the final frontier in the first Test against England at Edgbaston.

Sunil Gavaskar called the lack of preparation as the primary reason behind India's defeat.

The second Test begins at Lord's on August 9.

"If Virat Kohli is not the best batsman (in the world), he's very close to it".

Throw in the weather forecast - the long dry spell is due to break on Saturday with showers and longer spells of rain across the remaining three days of the Test - and I can't help feeling that there's value in backing the draw for this one at [5.1]. "They should have played at least two three-day games and proper first-class games".

Revealingly, Bayliss indicated England might need more than one player to compensate for Stokes's absence. He wrote, "Ajinkya Rahane & Murali Vijay will have to show some determination since they have scored runs in these conditions before".

Curran came in to bat when England were reeling at 87/7 in the second innings and looked down the barrel with the visiting bowlers, especially Ishant Sharma, having their tails up.

England cricketer Ben Stokes mocked two gay men before knocking two other men unconscious outside a Bristol nightclub, a jury has heard. All-rounder Ben Stokes has been replaced by Chris Woakes, whereas Surrey youngster Ollie Pope has replaced the All-rounder Dawid Malan. But in that time they were playing against the white ball. In his column, Chappell paid glowing tribute to Indian captain Virat Kohli, comparing his Edgbaston hundred to Stan McCabe's epic double hundred during the 1938 Ashes, which even made Sir Don Bradman give a standing ovation. "I understand that but you have eight days in-between and in those eight days, there should have been two three-day matches with a gap of couple of days between the matches", said Gavaskar, who averaged 41.14 in the 16 matches he played in England. With the off-spinner Ashwin making an impact while opening the bowling, the additional choice of Kuldeep Yadav could have put England on the back foot, especially given the fact that the likes of Cook, Jennings, Malan and Sam Curran had not been included in the eleven for the ODI and T20 series and had not played him before. They are the number one side in Test cricket and nobody goes to watch.

Team England: 20-year-old debutant Ollie Pope who has recently replaced Dawid Malan is a gamble which might hit India as his performance in County Championship was extraordinary.

One does not know whether the unpredictable selections by Kohli and Shastri are surprising their opponents but they are certainly unsettling Team India. I believe in this team because I believe that they have the ability.

Australian cricket captain Steve Smith has finally been dislodged as the highest-rated batsman in Test cricket after more than two-and-a-half years at the top of the pile. "On occasion, it can make people nervous I dare say, but on the whole, it animates them", he added. But I think Root is a fine batsman too and I like seeing him do well. He can play in every mode and so can Joe Root.

After the retirement of MS Dhoni from Test, Virat Kohli was handed the reign of Team India during the series.
