His comment came as the Egyptian news site Extranews.tv sent images of the animal to a local vet named "Dr N", who pointed out that zebras usually have a black nose and mouth area.

Mahmoud Sarha posed for a photo with the questionable zebra.

He posted a picture on his Facebook page, which quickly went viral.

Zebras have black snouts, and are bigger and less donkey-like than the animal in Sarhan's photo.

The freaky creature was spotted by student Mahmoud A.Sarhani who was visiting the recently opened animal sanctuary at the International Garden municipal park.

In 2009, a zoo in Gaza tried to fool the audience when it painted two donkeys to look like zebras.

There also appear to be paint smudges on the animal's face.

The animals are at Cairo's International Garden municipal park.

However, the zoo has denied that the zebra was fake.

Mr Sarhan said the enclosure was home to two animals, both which he says were painted.

But despite overwhelming evidence, Mohamed Sultan, the director of International Gardens Park, has denied it is an imposter.

This is not the first attempt by a zoo to market dubious specimens to unsuspecting visitors.

In 2013, a Chinese zoo was criticized for trying to pass off a large dog as a lion.
