Clinton also commented on President Donald Trump's summit with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Helsinki, amid special counsel Robert Mueller's warning that Russian intelligence services have active "interference operations" in United States politics.

He blamed the mainstream news media, "Fake News" as he called it again, for "talking negatively" about his meeting with Putin.

Trump adds on the Putin meeting: "Also, we got along very well, which is a good thing, except for the Corrupt Media!"

Trump's comments led to a quick rebuke from top Republicans in Congress, as well as many Democrats, and the President later said that he misspoke during the press conference and that he holds Putin personally responsible for election interference.

Trump has repeatedly cast doubt on the findings of US intelligence agencies that released a report in January 2017 saying they concluded that Russian President Vladimir Putin had ordered a hacking-and-propaganda campaign targeting the election.

Trump says in a Monday tweet: "remember, I gave up NOTHING, we merely talked about future benefits for both countries".

Trump met Putin in Finland for a private discussion with only the two leaders and interpreters present.

But details of what Trump and Putin may have decided have not emerged. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders claimed later in the day that Trump was saying "no" to answering additional questions.

Trump had just days earlier confirmed his acceptance USA intelligence conclusions about Russian interference.

"Russia is not our friend", he told host Bret Baier. A slightly larger 56 percent disapprove of Trump expressing doubts about USA intelligence agencies' conclusion that Russian Federation tried to influence the outcome of the 2016 election.

Former Trump homeland security adviser Tom Bossert described the assertion as a "cheap shot" and dismissed the significance of the arrest of a 29-year-old Russian citizen named Maria Butina who prosecutors say was working to infiltrate American political organizations. "Because it is all a big hoax, that's why, and he thought Crooked Hillary was going to win!" "They should drop the discredited Mueller Witch Hunt now!"

Schiff said Sunday on ABC News that President Trump is "acting like someone who's compromised". Either the Trump campaign did collude with the Russians to perpetrate electoral fraud, in which case President Trump has committed treason, or it did not, in which case the President is placing his personal interest in countering challenges to the legitimacy of the election over the integrity of American democracy.
