Putin: Trump emphasized Israel’s security at US-Russia summit

Famous for his tardiness at official talks, President Vladimir Putin did it again Monday - to U.S. President Donald Trump. The drama was playing out against a backdrop of fraying Western alliances, a new peak in the Russian Federation investigation and fears that Moscow's aggression may go unchallenged.

When he emerged on stage, Trump hailed a new era for American and Russian relations, saying "our relationship has never been worse, but that changed about four hours ago".

On Friday, the Justice Department laid out details of what it said was a far-reaching hacking scheme in an indictment of 12 Russian agents whom it accused of trying to disrupt the US election. Trump, for his part, noted that the U.S. and Russian Federation work together toward the goal of ensuring Israel's security, specifically as it relates to Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria and its troops' advance on rebel positions near Israel's Golan Heights.

Trump echoed his sentiments, telling a reporter: "The probe is a disaster for our country".

A number of German politicians share concern that Donald Trump would negotiate with Vladimir Putin unilaterally on subjects that might not be in line with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

We have continued our regular contacts at various events, but the time has come for a concrete dialogue on issues of concern to the entire world, the Russian leader said. The White House wouldn't immediately confirm the timing.

After two hours alone in a room with their interpreters, Trump and Putin convened a more traditional-style bilateral meeting, seated at a large conference table surrounded by senior officials from both countries.

Putin proposed that same plan after they met at a Group of Seven summit in Germany past year.

McCain's statement also refers to Trump's sidestepping of a reporter's question who asked who Trump believed on whether Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 presidential election. "The disagreements between our two countries are well-known and President Putin and I discussed them at length today".

Addressing reporters before the one-on-one meeting, Mr Putin struck a casual pose during Mr Trump's remarks, slouching in his chair with his legs wide and eyes low. He nodded along to some of Trump's remarks before they were translated, showcasing his fluency in English.
