Prime time: A day of deals at Amazon - and at its rivals

Amazon has tweaked this year's Prime Day in a number of different ways from previous years.

The Amazon Prime Day deals just keep on coming - and there's still another 24 hours of online bargains to come. Normally $5 each, Amazon has discounted each Dash button it offers to a mere $0.99.

Amazon's sale is aimed at its Prime members.

Companies are encroaching on Amazon's terminology as well as its discount strategy: a year ago, almost half of the 100 largest retailers (excluding the Seattle-based e-commerce giant) had a limited-time sale or messaging that included the word "prime", the survey found.

Retail experts say Alexa-only deals could offer some of the best savings.

There will be thousands and thousands of offers over the 36 hours so it is best just to head over to Amazon and start browsing. The service normally costs $99 a year.

The good news then is that today and tomorrow you can get 15 months of PlayStation Plus membership at half-price in the United Kingdom - so what would normally cost £69.98 is instead just £34.99 until midnight tomorrow, 17 July.

If you're an Xbox player you can also save money there too.

Prime Day sale gives subscribers access to over 200 exclusive new Prime Day launches. With that you still get the Oculus Touch controllers and the usual six free titles, including: Robo Recall, Lucky's Tale, Quill, Medium, Dead and Buried, and Toybox.

The e-commerce site will host rush hour deals from 4 pm to 6 pm IST on all four days of the Flipkart sale. It's worth asking "Alexa, what are your deals?" occasionally throughout the day to see if she's got something new that suits your needs. Many of those deals will be Amazon brands like Fire TV, Fire tablets and Kindle e-readers.

Amazon also encourages sellers to boost advertising on Prime Day, and one seller told CNBC that the marketplace is trying to figure out "how to double dip into our pockets". This popular subscription service, which reached Canada in 2013, offers more than 100 million customers access to free two-day shipping (in some areas it's one-day shipping), video and music streaming, and early and sometimes exclusive sales, along with other perks.
