"If they do a deal like that", Trump said, "we would be dealing with the European Union instead of dealing with the United Kingdom", adding that approach would "probably kill" any future trade deals with the U.S.

Trump told the newspaper he had advised May on how to conduct Brexit negotiations, "but she didn't listen to me".

In his interview with The Sun, Trump slammed May over her "soft" Brexit plan, which has put May's standing as the head of the Conservative Party in jeopardy.

Donald Trump arrives in Britain on Thursday for his first visit as United States president, flying into a whirlwind of protests.

The President went on to say former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who resigned over May's plan on Sunday, would "make a great Prime Minister".

During the meeting and press conference at Chequers, tens of thousands of anti-Trump protesters packed Regent Street in London on their way to Trafalgar Square under fierce sunshine, carrying banners criticising the US President's personality and politics. "I think they agree with me on immigration", he told media from Brussels on Thursday.

"Just make sure we can trade together, that's all that matters", he said.

"If you reported them that's good", Mr Trump told the political correspondent.

The Trumps later took off from Windsor in a presidential helicopter on their way to Scotland for a weekend stay at his Turnberry golf resort. I haven't been there in a long time.

Ms Thornberry said Mr Trump's comments on the PM's Brexit strategy and his suggestion Mr Johnson would be a "great prime minister" were "rudeness upon rudeness upon rudeness".

May's office said it would not comment on The Sun article during a greeting when Trump met May at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst to review a military exercise.

Mr Trump is due to face a press conference later in the day. The flying of the "Trump Baby" blimp was funded via a crowdfunding project with over £30,000 having been raised so far.

"I would much rather have her as my friend than my enemy", he said.

Mr Trump used the interview with the Sun to lay into Mr Khan, who criticised the American leader as "ill-informed" over a tweet following the London Bridge attack in June 2017.

Trump even took a shot at London Mayor Sadiq Khan for not taking a harder line on immigration and painted the city as a hub for terrorism. "He is thankful for the wonderful welcome from the Prime Minister here in the U.K".

The Trumps landed in Air Force One at Stansted Airport at lunchtime on Thursday to kick-start a four-day working visit to Britain as protests against his trip began.

Of Johnson, he said: "I have a lot of respect for Boris. The real reason Trump blames my friend @SadiqKhan for the terror attacks a year ago is simple", he tweeted.

Speaking in the grounds of the PM's official country residence, Mr Trump said he had given her a suggestion about how to come out on top in the talks but "she found it maybe too brutal".
