Earlier, it was reported that the Cabinet Division had allocated two helicopters to the NAB. In a video message tweeted by his daughter Maryam, the former premier said, "the country is at a critical juncture right now".

The verdict came at a time when Nawaz Sharif and daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif were in London to see Begum Kulsum Nawaz Sharif who has been undergoing treatment for cancer.

Pakistan's third major political movement, the Pakistan Peoples Party, joined the criticism of the crackdown, with its prime ministerial candidate Bilawal Bhutto Zardari questioning why Sharif's supporters would be prevented from gathering. He was shifted to Adiala Jail by the NAB after he was presented in an accountability court in Islamabad on Monday. Police have virtually put Lahore on lockdown as scores of Sharif's supporters clashed with police in the evening.

On July 6, Nawaz was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of eight million pounds was slapped on him in the Avenfield reference case, while Maryam was sentenced to seven years of jail and fined two million pounds by the accountability court.

A spokesman for Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party confirmed they were arrested soon afterwards.

Shahbaz Sharif is expected to lead a rally to Lahore's Allama Iqbal International Airport to receive Nawaz Sharif and his daughter.
