The Nato leaders, gathered in Brussels, held an unplanned emergency meeting earlier on Thursday after Mr Trump told allies to immediately increase their defence spending, diplomatic sources said.

As the United Kingdom grapples with its own future in the European Union, I hope that President Trump's visit will help to solidify the long friendship between our two great countries.

Asked if Mr Putin presented a threat, Trump said, "I don't want him to be and that is why we have NATO".

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries in 2014 committed to spending 2 percent of their gross domestic products on defence by 2024, but North Atlantic Treaty Organisation has estimated that only 15 members, or just over half, will meet the benchmark by 2024 based on current trends.

Trump has ramped up his rhetoric ahead of the talks - including in 3 separate tirades on Twitter on Monday and Tuesday, July 9 and 10 - making the summit one of the most hard in years for the military alliance that has underpinned European security since World War II.

But NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg pointed out that military spending had been rising in Europe since 2014 and members were making efforts to meet the objective, particularly Germany, which is often singled out by Trump for criticism.

Nato's secretary-general said the main focus should be on all members reaching the current target of 2% of GDP.

"Some are at 2 per cent, others have agreed definitely to go to 2 per cent, and some are going back to get the approval, and which they will get to go to 2 per cent", he said.

"We call upon [North Korea] to fully implement its global obligations; to eliminate its nuclear, chemical, and biological warfare capabilities and ballistic missiles, and abandon all related programmes", the statement said.

Trump said "actual" USA military spending is 4.2 percent of GDP, without explaining the big discrepancy.

The U.S. president's tirade was about it not being "fair to American taxpayers that Germany buys oil and gas from Russian Federation while enjoying the umbrella of defense provided by U.S. dollars", reports NBC News. He may deny it, ' Trump said. Energy exports represent Russia's main source of revenue, and Trump argues that the pipeline undermines NATO's goal, as it's created to counter Russian aggression.

The meeting brought together Mr Trump and Canada's prime minister Justin Trudeau, who irritated the U.S. president at the G7 by declaring that his country would not be pushed around.

Regarding his upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump explained he is a competitor, not an enemy. Tens of thousands of people are likely to protest in the British capital on Friday, while Trump is outside the city at May's country residence Chequers, before visiting Windsor to meet the Queen.

In response, the Twitter account of Russia's foreign ministry said they would be turning their attention to the World Cup instead of NATO's allegations.

"There is value in protecting the president in having a number of Americans in the room when the conversations take place, because just what I saw on the scale of a congressional visit can happen in a presidential visit in which the description of what transpired in the meeting does not fit reality", Moran said.
