Donald Trump flies in to a rough reception

Tall metal mesh barricades and concrete blocks have been erected around the perimeter of the US Ambassador's swanky central London residence, Winfield House, where Trump will spend Thursday night. I'm certainly going to Turnberry and I'll see him there.

"So I would imagine that's what they will do, but maybe they will take a little bit of a different route".

When asked about Trump's remarks, May said in Brussels: "What we are doing is delivering on the vote of the British people. that's what our proposal does".

Trump has always been a Brexit supporter and has expressed enthusiasm for a wide-ranging trade deal with Britain after Brexit, something heralded by eurosceptics as being one of the great benefits of exiting the bloc.

Trump's victory in the 2016 presidential election shocked British diplomats in Washington and relations between May, a vicar's daughter, and Trump have been strained at times.

Opposition MPS, backed by an online petition signed by almost 1.9 million people, called on May to cancel the state visit offered when she met Trump in Washington after his inauguration in January a year ago.

May has had to defend Trump's visit in the face of fiery criticism from opposition lawmakers.

Just hours before arriving in London, the United States president questioned progress in Brexit talks and Britain's new plan to remain close to the European Union on regulatory standards for goods.

The petition against Trump claimed an official state visit would be embarrassing for the Queen. A YouGov poll on Wednesday showed 77 percent had an unfavorable opinion of the president and just 50 percent thought his visit should go ahead.

Trump confidant Chris Ruddy believes the President, who is due to fly into the United Kingdom today, will not react how people think he will to the balloon.

"I would love to say that I think this is going to be a hugely successful visit but I think it's going to be very hard", he said at a pro-Trump gathering in parliament. "I'm very strong on immigration".

The embassy said these demonstrations were expected to attract large crowds and cause road closures.

Mr Trump will instead be ensconced at Windsor Castle, west of London on Friday when a blimp tethered next to the Houses of Parliament.

A giant 20-foot balloon depicting an orange and angry baby Trump in a nappy will rise above Parliament Square Gardens tomorrow after London Mayor Sadiq Khan led Greater London Authority gave permission for it to fly.

The U.S. Embassy has warned U.S. citizens to keep a low profile during the visit because of the protests, the sort of warning usually issued in more volatile locations.

While the visit has not been accorded the formal State Visit grandeur, May will seek to make up for it with a gala black-tie dinner hosted by her for around 100 guests in the spectacular setting of Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire.

The trip includes meetings with Prime Minister Theresa May, who has described the USA as Britain's strongest ally, and is determined to secure a trade deal after the country acts on Brexit and leaves the European Union in March 2019.

The two leaders are also expected to discuss Russia, Brexit and Middle East.
