Peña Nieto had been highly critical of U.S. President Donald Trump over the disputed wall along the U.S. -Mexico border and other issues.

An exit poll in Mexico is giving a big edge to leftist presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in his third bid for the presidency. On Saturday, the Democratic Revolution party said four of its members were killed in Mexico State, west of Mexico City, while trying to prevent hand-outs of goods by the ruling party to potential voters. We have a border of more than 3,000 kilometres, more than 12 million Mexicans live in the United States.

In addition to hoping to revamp the oil sector, Lopez Obrador's economic plans include promises to reform Mexico's troubled public pension system.

Bolivia's leftist President Evo Morales tweeted: "We are sure that his government will write a new page on Latin America's dignity and sovereignty". "Given the lame-duck government in Mexico and the fact that any revised NAFTA would have to be considered in 2019 by the U.S. Congress elected in November, it would not surprise me if negotiations continue at a slow pace".

Sunday's win by longtime political outsider Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who takes office on December 1, was expected by markets, though his margin of victory was wider than projected and it appears his coalition will have a majority in Congress. In his first loss - by a mere 0.56 percent to conservative Felipe Calderon in 2006 - his supporters held months-long protests in Mexico City and he referred to himself as "the legitimate president".

Three polling firms gave the former Mexico City mayor the win.

But Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, suggested that the Republican president could find common ground with Lopez Obrador, predicting "some surprising results". Driver is the author of "More or Less Dead: Feminicide, Haunting, and the Ethics of Representation in Mexico".

Speaking late on Sunday night as results trickled in, he vowed to tackle corruption, get a handle on Mexico's violent war on drugs and focus on poverty and inequality. "But it has to be made clear that he has to deliver what he promises and not become like the rest", he said. "We'll be looking in the coming weeks for indications of the size and nature of any fiscal stimulus or signs of a more interventionist energy policy". Mexico had a record 25,000 murders a year ago, Yahoo News reported.

Lopez Obrador praised the Mexican team that has been leading talks under Pena Nieto to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement.

"We will search for a relationship with the USA government based on friendship and development, always inculcated with mutual respect and in defense of our compatriots, immigrants who live and work in that country", he said. Beyond that, Ross said it was unclear whether Mexico's incoming president would either bring in new negotiators or set a different agenda.

Lopez Obrador also spoke of reducing Mexican immigration to the United States through economic development. "They shouldn't dare commit a fraud, because if they do they will meet the devil", said Yeidckol Polevnsky, president of Lopez Obrador's Morena party.

"They will inherit the talks where they are - now at a standstill, largely given US recalcitrance to compromise with its neighbours", she said, noting that Mexico has imposed its own retaliatory tariffs and the new administration would likely follow the same approach.
