The Chelsea striker wanted to emphatically thump the ball into the back of the net after Adnan Januzaj had already done so.

However, he ended up missing, hitting the post and slamming himself in the face with the rebound.

Belgium striker Michy Batshuayi can pinpoint the exact moment when he "f-- up" - and it is precisely one second after the photograph you can see above.

Fortunately, Batshuayi among many others managed to see the amusing side of his most unfortunate goal celebration.

He tweeted shortly after the game: "Ahahha I knew I would be f*cked the minute I come to my mentions why am I so stupid bro shit hurts".

The Belgium forward even claimed to have invented a new goal celebration, moving on from popular dances derived from the Fortnite video game.

Swept up in the moment, the Belgium player kicked the ball in celebration.

Belgium will take on Japan in the Round of 16 while England will face Colombia.

"Fortnite celebrations so overrated bro I had to create something new", he wrote on Twitter with the hashtag "Karma Is A B".

Batshuayi's two tweets had more than 100,000 likes within 30 minutes of being posted.

It was England's first defeat since a 3-2 loss to France last summer.
