President Trump has also promised to cease joint military exercises between USA troops and South Korea, which the North has long regarded as a provocation.

"The Trump administration wanted to use this suspension to quickly launch the process for North Korea to abandon its nuclear programme, and for the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula", he said.

The U.S. military says it is moving "assets" to a U.S. air base near South Korea's capital and to the inter-Korean border to prepare for North Korea's returning of the remains of U.S. soldiers who have been missing since the 1950-53 Korean War.

US President Donald Trump has made a u-turn over North Korea, again labelling them a threat.

The U.S. suspended military drills with South Korea following the summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

In May, prior to the summit, North Korea demolished tunnels at its sole underground nuclear test site, although outsiders have not inspected the result.

On Friday, Mattis met with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Joe Dunford and National Security Adviser John Bolton to discuss how "to implement the results of the Singapore Summit", Pentagon spokesperson Dana W. White said.

"We have been in communication with the government of North Korea", she said on Thursday. According to the Pentagon, North Korean officials have indicated in the past they have the remains of as many as 200 United States troops. It is separate from USA sanctions related to North Korean human rights abuses and a long list of worldwide penalties imposed over Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile testing.

He is declaring that North Korea has already begun ridding itself fully of nuclear weapons following an agreement with Kim in Singapore earlier this month, even though his Defense Department says otherwise.

The agency that oversees POW/MIA issues has cited North Korean officials as saying they have as many as 200 sets of remains that have been recovered over the years and are ready to be returned. Close to 7,700 USA troops remain unaccounted for from the Korean War, and about 5,300 of those were lost in North Korea.

Last year, 17,500 American troops and more than 50,000 South Korean troops joined the Freedom Guardian drills, although the exercise is mostly focused on computerized simulations rather than field exercises.

Trump said Kim has stopped testing missiles, including ballistic missiles that could reach the United States, and is destroying the engine testing site - an apparent reference to Sohae.
