According to billboard.com, the embattled rapper's rise to rap's mainstream has been mired in legal trouble as he was facing more than a dozen felony charges and allegations of domestic violence.

The Broward County sheriff's office said in a statement that an adult male who was shot near Miami on Monday afternoon and taken to a hospital was later pronounced dead.

Two up-and-coming US rappers, XXXTentacion and Jimmy Wopo, were killed on Monday in separate shootings near Miami and in Pittsburgh, police and local media reported.

Videos of what appeared to be Onfroy unresponsive in the driver seat of a vehicle circulated on social media Monday.

The Broward Sheriff's Office tweeted about the shooting, stating that "dispatchers received a call of a shooting at 3:57 p.m" and "an adult male victim was transported to an area hospital". The Broward County Sheriff's Department later told TMZ he had been pronounced dead.

The 20-year-old was apparently at a motorcycle dealership when a gunman approached him critically wounding him. Detectives believe the motive may be robbery.

Authorities say troubled rapper-singer XXXtentacion has been fatally shot in Florida. His debut album, 17, came out last August.

"In March, XXXTentacion's sophomore album, "?", debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart. He had been recently released from house arrest while he awaited trial on battery and harassment charges - all of which he denied.

As news of his death was confirmed, West, DJ Diplo and hip-hop star Juicy J all tweeted their condolences.

His music was removed from streaming giant Spotify's curated playlists for several weeks earlier this year because his lyrics allegedly promoted "hateful messages", Pitchfork reported.
